Dubbed “Damn Yankees” in 1950s stage and screen adaptations, those Bronx Bombers seemed as though they’d never let up. But in 1965, after an unprecedented 14 pennants in 16 seasons and an additional streak of 49 consecutive winning seasons, the Yanks were finally beatable. With remnants of those glorious squads aging and disabled, roster members showed up in Fort Lauderdale for spring training and autographed this 8-1/4 x 8-1/2” sheet of beach-themed stationery. Executed in black or blue ballpoint, the pennings average (“8-9”) potency. Includes: Benson (coach), Blanchard, Bouton, Crosetti (coach), J. DiMaggio, Downing, Hamilton, Hegan (coach), Howard, Keane (manager), Kubek, Linz, Lopez, Mantle, Maris, Mikkelson, Pepitone, Ramos, Reniff, Richardson, Sheldon, Stottlemyre and Tresh. Of note, of course, are the signatures of DiMaggio (who likely appeared out of his love for the team and the game) and Keane (who had just managed the Cardinals to a Fall Classic triumph against the Yankees, was in for a rude awaking with his current crumbling roster and was to pass away just two years later). This souvenir, incidentally, was originally given to an ailing nun whose colleague taught in Fort Lauderdale and was able to get some of her 8th grade students to visit the camp and secure the autographs. The sheet remains crisp with a vertical compacting fold that in no way affects the signatures. Full photo LOA from JSA.
