“The Manassa Mauler” inside the ring, Heavyweight Champion and boxing legend Jack Dempsey saw plenty of action off the canvas, as well. Four marriages, film appearances, endorsements and endeavors in hotel, restaurant and casino management attest to the icon’s multi-faceted trials and tribulations. This original photograph was signed by Dempsey. Measuring 5-3/8 x 9-15/16: the black-and-white independent studio portrait shows Dempsey standing in a suit and necktie. Just to the left of his handsome likeness, Dempsey has written “To Irene From Jack – Nov. 30 – 22” in black-ink steel tip fountain pen. While the signature and inscription have faded over nearly a century, impressions remain and the endorsement projects (“3-4”) strength and clarity. The photo has a “Bert K.S.” stamping on the obverse and vintage graphite pencil notations on the reverse. It was during the time of this endorsement (Nov. 30, 1922) that Dempsey was on his longest sabbatical from competition (exactly two years and two days). With the infamous “Dempsey Tunney” bouts still ahead, this is an appealing piece from the peak years of one of the biggest heroes in American sports. Full photo LOA from JSA.
