Dubbed “Gentleman Jim,” San Francisco native James J. Corbett was among the most famous bare-knuckle champions despite his resume of just 20 career bouts. With boxing outlawed in many states during Corbett’s era, the last sanctioned are-knuckle bout was in 1889. That being said, memorabilia and especially autographs from this genre are fleeting, indeed. This James Corbett cut signature is one such heirloom! Executed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen on a thick stock surface measuring 3-1/2 x 1-3/4”, Corbett’s salutation reads “With best wishes – Sincerely Jas J Corbett.” The flowing endorsement projects every bit of (“9”) strength and clarity. The piece is adhered, along with a printed quotation from Corbett (d.1933), to a red satin-lined backing of 5-7/8 x 8-1/4” Full photo LOA from JSA.
