Description

Tobacco collectors get puffed up with this super-rare collection of (16) c.1910 L40 College Yell leathers, all in original envelopes. While you may encounter an individual leather with envelope on occasion, finding this many with matching envelopes looks to be virtually impossible. All (16) of these century-old antique leathers report in better to excellent condition with sharp corners, clean surfaces and only modest signs of wear, while the envelopes are above average to better and remarkably all have intact flaps attached.

Measuring approximately 2-1/2 x 3-1/2", these very well preserved tobacco premiums are formatted with "College Yell" cheers and a variety of devices such as pennants, mascots or multi-sport athletes. Several feature gleaming silver metallic graphics, while others are embossed, tone-on-tone types and all are very pleasing with abundant original detail. The 2-3/4 x 3-3/4" envelopes are all titled identically with "Murad Turkish Cigarettes" and all are printed with "Factory No. 7, Third District State of New York".

At the time of issue, the college game was the premier level of football as far as national fan interest was concerned and Ivy League schools were typically the most dominant, accounting for nearly all of the championship teams of the era. Boosting this collection to a truly spectacular level is complete set of (8) Ivy League leathers, with Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale all accounted for. Also present are (8) others, with California-Berkeley, Chicago, Lehigh, Michigan Agricultural College, New York University, Rutgers, St. Louis and Syracuse.
