With free agency, astronomical salaries (and with them, hefty ticket prices) and more expansion on the horizon, some of baseball’s most revered players and executives gathered to autograph this baseball. We can safely assume it was an old-timers event and can say with certainty that it happened in 1971, as a spattering of Chicago Cubs signatures date specifically to that year. The lightly toned OAL Cronin sphere (grade “6”) showcases ballpoint pennings that average (“7-8”) strength and clarity. Includes: Sweet Spot: Rube Marquard (d.1980, “7” strength) and Zack Wheat (d.1972, “7-8” strength); North Panel: Casey Stengel (d.1975, “8-9” strength), Stan Coveleski (d.1984, “6-7” strength) and Satchel Paige (d.1982, “6-7” strength); West Panel: Jim Hickman, Fergie Jenkins (“8” strength) Billy Williams (“8” strength) and Bowie Kuhn (d.2007, “8” strength); East Panel: Paul Popovich (authentic signature, but has been enhanced) and Sam Rice (d.1974, “6-7” strength).
