From an era during which the All-Star Game was played like more than just an exhibition, this July 9, 1956 issue of Sports Illustrated previewed the much-anticipated event with symmetrically arranged player portraits on the front cover. Encapsulated and Graded Very Fine+ 8.5 by CGC, this example is one of only two at its tier with none graded higher. On the "Hardest to Find" list, this issue ranks #31. Among the 10 stars pictured are Berra, Mantle and Musial. The National League starting lineup, incidentally, was comprised of five Reds, two Cardinals and two Pirates. That set the precedent for the following year, when Cincinnati fans stuffed the ballot boxes to elect seven starters.
