PCL contracts are quite a rarity on the auction block—and especially those of Hall of Famers! Doby of course was no ordinary HOFer. He transcended the sports sphere as a Civil Rights trailblazer, being the first to integrate the American League. At the very end of his career, Doby played ever so briefly for the PCL's San Diego Padres (a then-affiliate of the Cleveland Indians) under fellow Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner (the then-GM). Doby was to receive $900 per month but only lasted 9 games before an injury sidelined him. The 8-1/2 x 11" contract is signed twice by Doby and twice by Kiner, with their blue-ink script averaging "9". Light filing wear. Auction LOA from JSA.
