Golden Age Archive/Olen Collection
Although the sports-photography market has been booming for over a decade now (since the Type system of authentication was first introduced in 2005), collector interest has primarily focused on pre-1980s Type I photography. In part, this is because Type I's became fewer and farther between as time and technology have rolled on. That is to say, the majority of surviving sports photos up through the 1920s are Type I originals developed straight from the negative. Then the 1930s and 1940s brought the advent of "wire transmissions," which soon gave way to a lower standard of photographic image quality in general, resulting in more news services and photography departments opting to reproduce their prints from "duplicate negatives" (creating the Type III and Type IV photos we now call "restrikes"). By the 1980s, as digital photography was dawning for a new generation of photojournalists, Type I photography developed from the original negative was on the endangered-species list. And today it's practically extinct.
For those classically trained, master photographers like Bob Olen, however, Type I's from the 1980s and 1990s DO exist, and we're pleased to report that demand for them is rapidly growing. Chiefly, perhaps, because these are some of the only Type I photos available anywhere for the legendary athletes of the Modern Superstar Era, whose legacies burnish more brightly with every passing year. The 1980s-1990s Olen photos offered here as part of the Golden Age Archive/Olen Collection are mainly Type I (unless specified as Type II for depicting events from decades earlier) and measure 8x10 (unless otherwise noted). They feature Olen's reverse-side copyright stamp and average EX-MT condition with great image quality and high gloss.
Here are Olen's Type I photos from Jets and Giants games w/L. Taylor, Lott, Simms, Cunningham, Marino, Elway, J. Kelly, Cunningham, Aikman, Moon, Walker, Esiason, Reeves, Carroll, etc.
