En route to their first of two straight pennants, (14) members of the 1939 Cincinnati Reds autographed this baseball. Headlining the souvenir is a sweet spot penning of Willard Hershberger, who would kill himself in a hotel room the following summer. The off-white ONL Frick orb (grade “6-7”) is signed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen. While the scriptings have endured fading, strengths vary and are noted below. Includes: Sweet Spot: Hershberger (“6” strength, d.1940); North Panel: Moore (“5” strength), Frey (“4” strength), Berger (“4-5” strength), Vander Meer (“4-5” strength) and Davis (“4” strength); South Panel: Joost (“4-5” strength), Goodman (“3” strength) and Werber (“3-4” strength); West Panel: Riggs (“4” strength); East Panel: (2) unidentified, Lombardi (“2” strength) and Craft (“4-5” strength). Auction LOA from JSA.
