Giant has gone down in infamy as James Dean's last leading role and last Oscar nomination. Released a full year after Dean's lethal car accident, the 3-hour epic Western drama also starred Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. Additionally, it lives on in Hollywood lore as the film that put Marfa, Texas on the map. (Later the site of No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood.) Offered is not one but TWO of the virtually never-seen tickets to the red-carpet Hollywood Premiere event, held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on October 17, 1956. (As seen here.) The oversized, 11x6 ticket pair is well-preserved in EX/EX-MT condition, and among its equally rare accoutrements is a unique and fascinating 4x5 snapshot of Dean (in glasses) from the film set. Sourced from actor Bob Nichols (who played the character Pinky Snythe), this collection features 9 more stills/snapshots (including Nichols' "Wardrobe Tests"), as well as his 8-1/2 x 11" packet of the original invitation and typewritten cast list housed within a Giant portfolio envelope. Lastly, there's a 10/17/56 Daily Variety newspaper advertising the Hollywood event, along with other related news clippings. To our knowledge, the only remotely comparable offering ever to reach the auction block was a single inferior-condition ticket and program to the NYC world premiere event (held a week earlier on 10/10/56) that sold for over $550 in 2012.
