A natural storyteller who loved telling jokes and ribbing teammates, Gabby Hartnett was the life of the party. Here, he riffs on his portrait image by comparing it to a prison inmate's mug shot. The recipient? Notorious prankster and former Gas House Gang member Ripper Collins, whom Branch Rickey called "The Instigator." (Little-known fact: Collins not once but twice played an entire game at first base without recording a single putout!) Hartnett's blue-ink "7-8" inscription reads, "Best Wishes to / 'Rip Collins' / Leo 'Gabby' Hartnett," with the humorous notation, "Convict / 047639871." Stamped on back by the National League Service Bureau whose publication-usage wear is mainly tape/pinholes in the corners. Auction LOA from JSA.
