After Jackie Robinson broke the major-league color barrier, John Ritchey did the same for the Pacific Coast League, becoming the PCL's first black player in over 30 years. The San Diego native known simply as "Johnny Baseball" ultimately won batting crowns in both the minor leagues and the Negro Leagues. Yet only a handful of Ritchey's signature examples have ever surfaced at auction. Here, he's joined by teammates Collins, Camelli, Seats, Graham, Thompson, Budnick, Jensen, Barrett, Kuper, Shupe, Adams, Rice, DeVito, Kerrigan, Rescigno, Jurisich, Walden, Clay, Flores, Mesner, Handley, Coscarart, Olsen, Wells and Reese. The blue-ink signatures rate "8-9" overall, and the 17-1/4 x 9-3/4" photo is EX with minor corner wear. Auction LOA from JSA.
