In 2008, a ball described as the "Earliest Known Satchel Paige Single Signed Baseball" sold at auction for almost $8,000. But that early dating is matched by this fine specimen—a medium to darkly toned "New Champion" ball (faded stitches) with Paige's "6"-strength signature and Bismarck-related notations. Satchel was then leading the integrated 1935 Bismarck Churchills, one of the best semipros squads of all time and subject of the book
Color Blind: The Forgotten Team That Broke Baseball's Color Line. Fellow HOFer Double Duty Radcliffe, potential future HOFer Quincy Trouppe and stars Hilton Smith and Moose Johnson all joined Paige on the trailblazing Bismarck team that season. Based on the August date notation and the Goldsmith's sporting-goods store stamping, the rarefied relic was clearly signed at the historic inaugural National Semipro Championship, held in Wichita and won by power-packed Bismarck. "That was the best team I ever saw; the best players I ever played with," Ol' Satch once said. "But who ever heard of them?" Full LOA from JSA.
