British artist Barry Leighton-Jones (1932-2011) primarily made his mark in the United States and has drawn comparisons to the likes of Norman Rockwell. Leighton-Jones is most famous for his paintings of clowns (including legendary American clown Emmett Kelly) and "urchin" children. Evidently a private commission, this Nolan Ryan original artwork is the first Leighton-Jones athlete portrait ever to surface publicly. (Indeed, we are only aware of a couple sports-themed pieces in Leighton-Jones' entire body of work—both of which feature clowns at baseball stadiums.) The 30x40 rendering is signed by the artist at lower left, and then notated by him with Ryan's name on the reverse. There is light surface staining mainly on the lower half of the canvas.
