Deep breaths, football fanatics, deep breaths. We don’t blame you for getting worked up at the sight of these antique college football banners, certainly their graphic design is as good as it gets. Reported as 1920s banners supporting the Ohio State Buckeyes, these magnificent homecoming heralds are the definition of display appeal.
This matched set of (2) consists of 23-1/4 x 35-1/4” banners, similarly formatted with a period “leatherhead” player against a black canvas field with stitched in red and white muslin letter plates at top and bottom. The ball carrier is seen in a red jersey and gold-brown pants as a great depiction of the period. One banner is worded with “Home” at top and “Coming” at bottom, while the other notes “Welcome” at top and “Visitors” at bottom.
Overall condition of both banners is very pleasing, with vibrant colors and fairly clean surfaces, though minor wear is evident upon close inspection, chiefly around the perimeter, including pinholes at the bottom of the “Visitors” piece. The visible fold lines are of the least distraction and will likely ease out over time when displayed. Give your best cheers and most determined bids for this winning pair of century-old college football keepsakes.
