Like so many baseball stars, Smoky Joe Wood adored the game well into his retirement. The glory of a 34-5 record in 1912 would likely transfix any mere mortal to the National Pastime. So he remained, while not at the Major League level but as a coach for Yale University for 20 seasons. Subsequent visits to big league ballparks were frequent, as were his appearances at baseball card conventions as the last living member from the hallowed T206 set. This baseball showcases a bold autograph authored by the former Beantown hero. The lightly toned sphere (grade “6”) was crafted for the 1979 All-Star Game in Seattle. On a side panel, the blue ballpoint signature reads: “Joe Wood Sr” and projects (“9”) strength and clarity. Well into his 80s at the time of this signature, Wood (d.1985) went on with his appearances, appearing at Fenway park in 194 at the tender age of 94. Comes with a full photo LOA from JSA.
