In the midst of amassing four straight championships, the New York Yankees took on the Chicago Cubs in the 1938 World Series. Unfortunately for the “Cubbies”, the result was a four game sweep by the talent-rich “Bombers”, who were led by peerless legends Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. A fine souvenir of this event arrives with this highly pleasing New York version 1938 WS program.
This colorful publication dazzles with vivid art deco period graphics. The spine is more than decent and a good level of gloss is evident, as is a less than expected degree of minor wear, leading to a solid (VG-EX) rating with deference to the centerfold being detached but present. The scoring grids are unmarked and the pages are generally clean, bright and supple. Among the photos are Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Joe McCarthy, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Lefty Gomez, Gabby Hartnett, Dizzy Dean, Jacob Ruppert, Phillip Wrigley and Yankee Stadium.
Also present is a Game 3 ticket stub from Yankee Stadium (FR). This game was won by the Yankees 5-3 on the strength of homers by Dickey and Gordon, Joe Marty homered for the Cubs, DiMaggio went 1-3 and Gehrig went 1-4 in his next to last WS game. Tragically he would play just nine more games after this one, as his career and life were cut short by illness.
