Toiling through the 1953 season in an uncertain climate, the Cincinnati Redlegs endured a woeful sixth-place showing. The team name was changed that season from “Reds” to “Redlegs” as a communist scare swept America. On the managerial front, Roger Hornsby was at the helm for his sixth different team. His hitting skills and competitive fire were never in question (he missed his own mother’s funeral to play in the 1926 World Series). But his personal skills were said to be less than perfect. During that 1953 campaign, Hornsby and his Redlegs autographed this vintage album sheet. Measuring 11-3/4 x 14”, the thick stock page is signed in blue ballpoint by (19). Bold pennings show (“9-10”) strength throughout and include: Bobby Adams, Fred Baczewski, Gus Bell, Bob Borkowski, Rocky Bridges, Jack Collum, Ford Garrison (coach), Jim Greengrass, Grady Hatton, Rogers Hornsby, Bob Kelly, Clyde King, Ted Kluszewski, Willard Marshall, Roy McMillan, Harry Perkowski, Bud Podbielan, Andy Seminick and Johnny Temple. Note: there are chips and age-induced discoloration along the edges, though these flaws do not affect the autographs. Auction LOA from JSA.
