One of the great non-sport sets of the 1930s, the National Chicle Sky Birds series is both challenging and broadly entertaining. Celebrating the heroes of early aviation from the time when very few people were able to take to the skies, this vibrantly colored series proved a big hit at time of issue and now holds a firm spot at the top of non-sport want-lists. Offered here in a unique format, this photo layout incorporates (14) Sky Birds cards, including several major keys.
All included cards are adhered to a clear sheet of plastic that is laid over a white backer board marked professional editorial notations and cropping lines. Two other plastic sheets are laid loose over the cards and a title block at top right with “Sky Birds” lettering in different colors on each sheet. Judging by the type of notations, it appears this layout was photographed for inclusion in a non-sport identification/price guide or possibly a magazine article. The board remains in decent shape and generally the card obverses are very pleasing in showing VG to EX detail, with deference to (2) with clipped corners.
Featured cards are: (7) Series of 48: #20 Eddie Rickenbacker, #23 Baron Von Richtofen, #28 Russell Boardman, #32 James Doolittle, #34 Frank Hawks, #36 Charles Lindbergh, #37 Clarence Chamberlain; and (7) Series of 144: #29 Floyd Bennett, #30 Ruth Nichols (clipped corners), #38 James McCudden (clipped corner), #40 Bernt Balchen, #49 Orville Wright, #88 C.B. Eielson, #91 Major DeSeversky.
