Nowadays you field five .300 hitters and four starting pitchers with winning records and you can bet you'll be riding the bandwagon to the postseason. No so for the 1934 Cleveland Indians, who had to settle for third place, behind the Tigers and Yankees, who had even more dominant weapons. Recall the "Tribe's" '34 campaign with this team-signed sheet. Appearing on a sheet of WGAR Broadcasting Company/Statler Hotel Cleveland letterhead dated 9/29/34, are (20) 1934 Cleveland Indians autographs, including HOFer Earl Averill and the mysterious Moe Berg.
This vintage sheet shows VG detail with deference to two sections that have been clipped out, including the section that bore the signature of manager Walter Johnson, who is listed as one of the notables on an accompanying LOA from PSA/DNA. The remaining (20) autographs show pleasing (average "7-8") potency, with: Earl Averill, Moe Berg, Bill Brenzel, Clint Brown, Lloyd Brown, Johnny Burnett, Milt Galatzer, Bob Garbark, Odell Hale, Ed Gharrity, Mel Harder, Willie Kamm, Bill Knickerbocker, Thornton Lee, Bill Perrin, Hal Trosky, Joe Vosmik, Ralph Winegarner, Lefty Weisman, Bob Weiland.
