Description

While colorful, informative and fun to collect, German language card albums aren’t usually that much to brag about. This time we’re going to sound the bells and whistles, because this trio of 1930s Olympic album card sets is gold medal material. All three of these ancient albums look to be complete, with all required cards pasted into the appropriate spaces. Overall the cards are sharp and clean, with vibrant colors and bright white borders and show average NM to MT details. The hardcover albums are also pleasing, showing above average to better quality.

What really sets this group apart from typical similar fare is that two have original dust jackets and included among the cards is a 1932 Babe Ruth card printed while his career as a player was ongoing. Also present are several cards from the 1936 Olympics featuring legendary track star Jesse Owens, who gave Hitler a good case of the squirts and the 1936 edition is especially interesting thanks to some magnificent full page illustrations of Olympic scenes.

Featured are:

1932 “Handbuch des Sports” (Sports Handbook) printed in Berlin by a publisher with way too many letters in the name, features (113) cards pasted in throughout, including Babe Ruth on page 83, some seriously sporty cars on page 7, a Japanese baseball catcher card on page 9 (not many of those around, because Lefty O’Doul wasn’t even done teaching Japan how to play baseball yet), a somewhat known boxing card on page 15 and an early hockey card on page 27, though technically not an Olympic album, the balance of cards include a good number of Olympic athletes

1932 “Die Olympischen Spiele in Los Angeles” (LA Olympic Games) published in Hamburg by H.F. & PH.F. Reemtsa, features (201) various size cards pasted in throughout and has original photo dust jacket which though torn remains serviceable

1936 “Die Olympischen Spiele 1936” (1936 Olympic Games) published in Hamburg by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, features (196) various size photo cards pasted in throughout, including (7) with Jesse Owens, has original dust jacket in excellent shape with wrap-around crowd scene
