In August, just six short months ago, a nearly identical Mathewson check signed on the very same day (June 6, 1922) sold at auction for a whopping $21,600. The only differences? Condition and encapsulation. That one was EX-MT with a PSA/DNA MINT 9 signature. This unencapsulated rival delivers an equally strong, black-ink "9" signature yet happens to bear vintage tape reinforcements on two front edges and the reverse to shore up light folds/creases. Notably, the 6-1/2 x 2-3/4" check dates to Mathewson's time at the famous tuberculosis sanitarium in Saranac Lake, NY, where he convalesced and contemplated a return to the baseball life as a front-office executive. Matty wrote the check out to luxury department store Franklin Simon & Co., whose flagship store was long located on NYC's Fifth Avenue. Full LOA from JSA.
